Given that the Demoscum, for all their supposed UNITY!!!!!1!!ONE!!!1, seem to be imploding like a black star, you’d think that all McZhamnesty need do now is run a strong-yet-typical GOP campaign, and the White House would be his, right?
Guess again.
According to reports, McRINO has selected his running mate.
And of the three presumed finalists, none are promising.
If he picks Pawlenty, he receives virtually nothing in the way of bounce – and if you think Pawlenty’s gonna deliver Minnehaha for Old John™, you got another think coming.
If he picks Lieberman, he loses his conservative base.  And no less a person than Lieberman himself has told McCain this.
And if he picks Romney – sorry to tell you this, conservatives, but McDoofus loses the election, guaranteed.
“But why, Spats?”, I hear you ask.
Simple.  And I’ll say it, even if no one else will:  Romney’s a Mormon.
We evangelicals take our faith seriously.  And Scripture advises us that Mormonism, while noble & honorable in its regard for the family, is still – by definition – a cult.
The evangelical wing of the party will not support a Mormon in such a high position of power.  And mark my words – without us, the GOP will not win.  On that, you can safely bank.
And you can take the accusations of religious bigotry and narrow-mindedness and shove ’em back up your piehole.  We’re adamant about this, and name-calling will make us even more stubborn.  We’re funny that way.
McCain’s best bet, if you ask us (or even if you didn’t) is someone like Fred Thompson or even Rob Portman of Ohio, or perhaps Newt Gingrich (although I have to wonder just how willing he’d be to cave in to Demoscum at the drop of a hat).
But if he picks Romney, he’s done.  Trust me on this.
UPDATE:  And not necessarily hedging my bet here, but all of the above about Romney is predicated on the evangelical wing of which I spoke actually doing what I expect them to do.  I could be wrong, and they could support McCain even if he does pick Mitt.
If that happens, I’ll be sorely disappointed in the evangelicals.  (Then again, the SBC hopped in bed with the environmentals this year, so maybe I shouldn’t be too terribly surprised if it happens.)

Spats, you’ve missed one possibility. Saw this one earlier today on Drudge. Seems that a certain US Senator from Texas and former Texas State Comptroller…. Kay Bailey Hutchison has also been bandied about in the more obscure reaches of the MSM.
While I mostly agreed with how she took care of Texas finances, and have generally liked how she has voted for the most part since she became one of our two US Senators, I really haven’t liked the direction she has recently been plodding towards. Could be the posturing to make a run at the Governor’s Mansion after Perry vamooses, or she’s looking to a more prominent address inside the Beltway. Not sure, but she’s seemed to have dropped her more conservative leanings for ones that are more centrist or even almost liberal.
Not good in my opinion.
I’ve seen it & heard about it, and I tend to think there’s not much to it.
For one thing, she’s been insistent that she doesn’t want the position.  Say what you want about her – and I do, to be sure – but “disingenuous” isn’t a word I’d use.
Secondly, she’s dropped hints that she wants the Governor’s Mansion more than the vice-presidency – although if Big Dickhead Perry continues this pattern of developing a spine, particularly where it comes to executing illegal-alien criminal-types, she’d be facing an uphill battle.
Now, Perry, OTOH…
Yup, have to agree Spats.
But since she’s falafelled on things like the border fence and amnesty, I think she’s likely to have more than an uphill battle.
I’m also wondering where Perry has found the extra calcium to put in his spine. Because as you so deftly pointed out, he’s been without one for about a term and a half now. Not to mention, is all this for “show” or is it real? Is he looking to trade places with Kay or is he going to do the proper thing and disappear like Grannie Annie did?
Inquiring minds are curious.
One might be tempted to mention our greatest non-Christian president, Thomas Jefferson, but there are two notable differences:
1) Jefferson’s record is stronger than Romney’s.
2) Jefferson didn’t belong to a religion that claims that Trinitarians (or any other nominally Christian non-Mormons)really aren’t Christians.
Point 2 ***will*** drive away a lot of Evangelicals. Not all of them, though:
http://www.evangelicalsformitt.org/
Over here I implied an endorsement myself, arguing that he would steal less from us than his primary opponents would. But not less than Jefferson.
Romney would have a better chance with evangelicals if he were candid enough to say this to us: “We say you aren’t Christians, you say we’re not Christian, but that has no bearing on anything you or I want the government to do. We agree on this and this and this policy, and that’s why you should vote for me.”
There are still many far better veep choices, like Brownback and Pawlenty. If only Dick Armey were younger…
Rumor has it that Romney’s out.
From a practical point, Romney would be a huge gamble. There are a lot of people who take da bloghost’s position, and the Dems would capitalize on his bad blood with McCain. He’s also vulnerable to accusations of flip-flopping like a spatula 🙂
Confirmed – it’s Sarah Palin!
