Yeah, yeah, I know what I said about going silent.

But Denizen & fellow blogger Alan K. Henderson pointed me to this, and it’s just too good.&#160 (And too true, too, but that’s another post.)

No kidding.&#160 (sigh)

What the heck is the “BCS”?

  2. Bowl Championship Series, David.&#160 It’s a method for determining college football’s national champion.

In theory, the two best teams at the end of the season, as ranked by polls run by both computers & humans, play one game for the NCAA Division I-A championship (not to mention a pretty little football trophy made of Waterford&#169 crystal).

It’s a flawed system, and roundly laughed at far & wide, but it’s the best the Powers That Be&#153 have come up with to this point, absent a playoff system.

    Thanks Darth.

The BCS is a system designed to pair the most likely best and second-best college teams in the nation, and then, to funnel millions of dollars to the six football conferences deemed to be ‘worthy’ of receiving those millions of dollars. It was a system designed by those six conferences (Big Ele….err…Ten, Dainty Dozen Big 12, Southeastern, Atlantic Coast, Big East and Pacific 10 Conferences) to funnel millions of dollars to the six conferences deemed to be the ‘best’ conferences, coincidentally being the same six conferences who came up with the system. I can name, off the top of my head, two “non-Automatic Qualifying” conferences that are at least as good as two of the “BCS” conferences, and yet, those two conferences are criticized for not being “BCS” conferences, when they weren’t even asked about being in the BCS. For the record, the Mountain West and Pass-Happy Western Athletic Conferences are AT LEAST as good as the ACC and Big East Conferences, playing schedules that are, at the very minimum, no easier than the two mentioned “BCS” Conference schedules.

The BCS is a shameless, blatant attempt to funnel millions of dollars ($13,000,000 per BCS bowl game, of which there are 5) to each others conferences. In addition, there is NO official “NCAA Division 1-A Football Championship”, in any shape or form. The BCS Championship Game crowns the BCS Champion, NOT the NCAA Champion. According to NCAA rules, it would take a playoff system to determine an NCAA Champion. BUT, the university presidents will NOT allow a playoff, because, of all things, university presidents already don’t like how much money college athletics control. A playoff system would give the athletic departments even MORE money…and we all know how much university administrators like people who can do things that the administrators can’t do.

I’m beginning to think that replacing the BCS with the Climate Research Unit in East Anglia is actually a step in the right direction.

Mozilla Firefox doesn't do too badly, either; in fact, it's His Rudeness' browser of choice.
