I’m fortunate to know several of Dallas’ finest in blue.
No, not as a perp, thankyouverymuch™.  I’ve had opportunity to meet several cops in the course of what I do.  In addition, I had a pair of uncles who worked in Ft. Worth and other county departments.  Moreover, several bloggers with whom I’m somewhat acquainted belong to the Blue™.
All of them, I’m certain, are properly embarassed by this.
(Here’s a YouTube vid corresponding to the story):
A Texas couple, whose sick dog died as the pair waited along a Texas roadside while a police officer wrote them a speeding ticket, said they are not satisfied with how the officer involved was reprimanded and believe he should be fired.
Michael Gonzalez and his girlfriend were pulled over as they raced to an animal hospital, near San Marcos, Texas, allegedly at speeds up to 100 mph, Aug. 5. Gonzalez is seen on the police dashboard camera screaming hysterically that the dog, a 3-pound teacup poodle named Missy, was dying.
We’ll forget, for a second, the emotional attachment Gonzalez & his girlfriend had to the dog.  For that alone, this power-hungry Nazi-in-blue should fry, job-wise.  We’ll forget, for just a brief moment, that Gonzalez & his girlfriend actually, y’know, loved  this beautiful little puppy and were actually, y’know, trying to, like, save her life.
Teacup poodles are a relatively rare breed.  According to this site, they can run upwards of $4,000.
Lemme say that again.  Four.  Thousand.  Dollars.
This swastika-behind-a-badge just caused this young man to lose a very  expensive animal.  One for which he may very well have had to save a lot of hard-earned money.
And then, just so Sgt. Billy-Bob Bad-Ass could add insult to injury – you know, twist the knife a little further – he adds this little blurb:
“It’s just a dog, you can get another one,” Officer Paul Stephens is heard saying.
“It’s just a dog, you can get another one.”
A beloved pet.  Who just happened to cost between $2,500 and $4,000.  An animal you just don’t replace with a trip to the local shelter or the ASPCA, either for the emotional attachment or the financial one.
“Just a dog, he can get another one.”
Denizens, I’m sorry, I can’t type any effin’ more tonight.  I can’t see past the RCOB.

It’s hard to not sympathize with this case. I hate speed traps in general. I know, I know, cops *think* they are helping people get where they are going more safely. And when somebody is doing 100+, then they are (probably) actually right. But the rest of the time, not nearly as often as they think. I’ll bet you far more accidents are caused by some inconsiderate jerk refusing to get over properly and some hothead trying to whip around them “to teach them a lesson” than straight speeding.
On the other hand, how many cops do you know of who can AFFORD a $4000 dog? Be honest now spats, most aren’t paid anywhere near enough to afford one of those. Especially not if they’ve got a family to support. Do you really think that they are going to know that the dog is that expensive just by looking at it? Sorry, not likely.
As to the heartless response, that was uncalled for, true… but on the other hand if he had never seen a dog suffer through this particular malady how on earth was he to know that their emergency truly was real? I’ll bet you anything that he thought some arrogant bungholes were making up a lame excuse to try to get out of a ticket and was just giving them back the same crap they were giving him. Or so he thought. Turns out he was wrong, but he didn’t KNOW that.
All in all, no I’m sorry, the cop should not be fired. Whoever came up with speed traps in the first place probably should be… but not him.

Oh, I can guarantee you, Robert – they’ll know the next  time – especially if these guys hire an attorney and go after the city (and I have the distinct feeling that’s exactly  what they’re going to do).
In fact, if this turns out like I think it’s going to – San Marcos will wind up instructing their officers to treat every Heinz-57 mutt like it’s a pure-bred French poodle.
I might almost agree with you on that, maybe.
On the other hand, how many folks do you know of who would even think  of using a dog like that for a get-out-of-jail-free prop?  Sometimes you just need to err on the side of the citizen, and if you get burned like that, okay.
Maybe he thought it was a lame excuse; I’ll give you that.  What ever happened to offering to take the dog & the girl the rest of the way and the guy meets up with them at the vet?  He could have ticketed them there, if he was that intent on slapping one on them.
He made a judgement call, and he screwed it up royally.  And to play cavalier with their emotions like that at that point just exacerbated the situation.  He adopted a COPS  mentality towards the situation when one wasn’t called for, IYAM.
And as I just said – it’s about to become a very expensive lesson for San Marcos.
It was a dog. They can get a new one. The dog wouldn’t have survived until the vet, anyway. THAT little part gets left out, of course.
