What I am about to say, I say with the full knowledge that at least two of us who post here, me being one, have been married at least twice.
Perhaps the reason that same sex marriage has become possible in our culture has more to do with the disrespect with which straight people have treated marriage, than it does with the LGBT crowd? When we are getting married and divorced at the drop of a hat, and when we treat marriages as disposable, why should gay folks not want to be a part of it? Perhaps the first step toward eliminating the same sex marriage issue, is to fix the attitudes of the straight folks, and just maybe the first step to that is to eliminate no fault divorce?
Just something to think about.

Oh, but Vicar – can you imagine the absolute noise  coming from two improperly-matched heterophobic divas  when they come to the horrific realization that (gasp!) THEY CAN’T GET DIVORCED?!?!ONE?!?!!!!!ELEVENTYQUADRILLION1!?!?!?!

There’s a reason that not even homosexuality-tolerant societies dreamt up same-sex “marriage,” historically speaking. Marriage was understood as a social contract to regulate the sexual and habitational activity of the segment of the population (i.e. almost all of it) whose said activity replenishes the population. Civilization loses its footing on the learning curve (culturally, technologically, etc.) if most of the next generation is emotionally screwed up. Keeping Mom and Dad together minimizes the spread of arrested development among youth.
But two things happened that steered public opinion to think of marriage as a private contract. Easy contraception and easy sex led people to disassociate children from marriage and even sex from marriage. marriage eventually became a private lifestyle choice and not a civic obligation.
